What is #Day1?
#Day1 is a free, simple and effective program to prevent bullying in organizations of all kinds. #Day1 is innovative and research-based. #Day1 is a 3 page downloadable toolkit comprised of 1) instructions 2) a Declaration to be read and 3) the Upstander Pledge.

How does it do that?
#Day1 uses a simple declaration followed by a pledge that is clear for the participants and ensures that all members of your classroom, workplace, team or organization know how they are expected to behave and how they are NOT expected to behave. The intervention relies on

  1. a person in authority
  2. making a clear verbal statement
  3. early in their tenure
  4. being specific and
  5. getting confirmation that the declaration has been heard.

It is then followed up with a call to action for three Upstander behaviors to model.

#Day1 is a great supplement to other bullying prevention or remediation programs. We do not seek to replace any programming currently in place. #Day1 is not a silver bullet but it is a critical step in reducing bullying.

Who is #Day1 for?
#Day1 can be used with any organization! People think bullying only happens in schools, but it can happen at work, church, Greek letter organizations, volunteering groups, scouting, sports teams- anywhere people meet….even online. #Day1 works in all of these environments.

We have toolkits to work with people of all ages and developmental abilities.
Toolkits are available for English language learners in several languages including Spanish, Arabic and Albanian.

Why does the #Day1 program work?
#Day1 declaration and pledge talks about what bullying is, how people bully, and what to do if you or someone else is bullied.

Often, people don’t do anything about bullying because they don’t know what to do. By talking about bullying from #Day1 people are empowered to take action against bullying and be upstanders instead of bystanders.

Having a person of leadership read the declaration signals to community members that bullying is not tolerated and that the leadership are safe people to come to if bullying needs to be reported.

What if #Day1 has already passed?
#Day1 is when YOU want it to be! Sure, the program works better the closer to beginning of any group starting, but it has had results when used for even the last 2 weeks of school. #Day1 is the first day that you decide to make sure everyone is on the same page about bullying.

Is there a cost?
#Day1 is FREE!
